The presentation, “Patents for the Entrepreneur,” delivered by Joseph E. Maenner of Maenner & Associates, offered a practical and thorough introduction to the U.S. patent system, especially geared toward innovators and entrepreneurs. Joe explained that patents grant the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention—not the right to make or sell it yourself. He covered what qualifies for patent protection, the different types of patent applications, and the critical importance of timing—particularly filing before public disclosure to preserve international rights. The seminar also explored how to read patent claims, manage costs, and use patents strategically to support business goals. Attendees learned about infringement risks, Bayh-Dole implications for federally funded research, and the value of a strong IP portfolio. As a fun and memorable touch, Joe was accompanied by Hero, his IP Law mascot, who joined him for the session.
