Deepen your knowledge of the range of financial resources available to advance research from initial concept through proof of concept to commercialization. Through a series of live case studies with doctoral and postdoc founders, students will create a financing roadmap, spanning from bootstrapping and America’s Seed Fund (SBIR/STTR) to angel investors and corporate venture capital, to utilize throughout the stages of research translation. Emphasis on professional skills of: communication, project management, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and networking, resilience and adaptability.

By the end of the course, doctoral students will be able to identify research commercialization financing options, evaluate financing strategies based on the stage and needs of a research opportunity, analyze potential funding organizations and investors relevant to a specific research area and industry, and develop a financing roadmap and targeted professional network to support advancement toward commercialization.

Faculty:
Dr. Michael Lehman (MD, MBA), Senior Professor of Practice, Faculty Director of Technical Entrepreneurship, and former Provost Faculty Fellow at Lehigh University, brings a unique and interdisciplinary pedigree to the course: training as medical doctor with an MBA, work at JNJ and in hospital settings, and creator of entrepreneurship programs at three universities to support student innovators from the arts, humanities, social sciences, naturals sciences, education, business, and engineering. He is active with the LifeX accelerator program as both an entrepreneurial lead and guest expert, providing commercialization and go-to-market guidance for life sciences companies. Dr. Lehman holds a BS from Juniata College, an MD from the Penn State College of Medicine, and an MBA from the University of Leeds in England.
