Lehigh University’s Research Translation AcceLUrator (RTA) program, part of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Accelerating Research Translation (ART) initiative, seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and societal impact. Backed by a $6 million, four-year NSF award, RTA focuses on translating discoveries by faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers into prototypes, products, and programs that address complex societal challenges. The initiative is led by an interdisciplinary team under John Coulter, Associate Vice Provost of Research Translation. The program will also provide translational research training, advancing innovations across fields such as engineering, health, science, business, and education.

The program provides:

  • Comprehensive Translational Research Education and Training Modules – Tailored learning experiences designed to equip participants with the skills to move research from theory to real-world application.
  • Dedicated Mentorship and Innovation Support – Personalized guidance throughout the journey, from ideation to impact, with experienced mentors committed to helping participants navigate challenges and refine their innovations.
  • Access to Strategic Resources and Networking Opportunities – A robust support system, including access to resources, tools, and a network of collaborators and potential partners.
  • Pathways to Market or Community Impact – Practical insights and frameworks for commercialization, licensing, or open-access innovation aimed at empowering participants to maximize the societal benefit of their research.
